Message from the Chair
Yes, a bunch of Republican Senators just went on the record saying it’s perfectly A-OK for a sitting US President to incite a mob attack on our nation’s Capitol. To be honest, there’s already so much that’s been said on that subject, I don’t think I can add any new insight or perspective. History will remember it for what it was.
Instead, I’d rather share that I’m actually feeling quite hopeful and optimistic about our future! Below, you will read about our Volunteer of the Month, Tammy Sampson. It is my view that our most precious resource in the Greenwood County Democratic Party are the volunteers. Without people like Tammy who play a role in spreading the Democratic way, we’re no more than a social club – and social clubs simply do not change the world!
As Dr. Robert Saul shared with us at our last Virtual Breakfast Meeting, everyone can play a part, no matter how big or small. Dr. Saul works to improve the community through his words and published books and letters. Tammy played her part out on the streets distributing signs and driving neighbors to the polls.
In this newsletter, you will see many other examples of those volunteers who are making a difference one conversation, one distributed meal, one educational seminar, one poem at a time. YOU can get involved in your special way as well. Help edit a video, design a brochure, write some postcards, stuff envelopes, share a post on Facebook, represent a voting precinct, or even run for office!

Message from the Chair
Preparing for our monthly Virtual Breakfast Meetings is one of my favorite activites as your Chair. Some months, it is a challenge to acquire guests and produce segments of interest and value to you.
Then sometimes, like this upcoming Saturday, I am absolutely blessed with an abundance of speakers bringing valuable and timely content.
Dr. Mathew Logan will be talking about the COVID vaccine, discussing its safety, effectiveness, and availability. If you have any questions for Dr. Logan, please e-mail us at info@gwdcountydems.org by no later than 9 am on Friday, Feb 5.
We were also very fortunate to get the time of Dr. Robert Saul, an absolute treasure from Greenwood County, whose recent book “Conscious Parenting” contains a surprising and timely take on a subject that’s very relevant to our activities as a political party.
As a new Chair, I’ve been very fortunate to have made friends with other Chairs throughout the state. We’ll have an interesting and occasionally humorous roundtable with Timika Wilson of Union County and Angela Geter of Spartanburg County to get their take on Party organization and activism.
We will have a quick SC Legislative update from former candidate Dense Waldrep, commentary about the proposed SC State budget from our Treasurer, George Swindell, and of course GWCDP updates including the announcement of our Volunteer of the Month!

TODAY’S WOMEN’S REALITY CHECK

As Roe vs Wade 1973 has become a “hot topic”, the reality is that women’s fundamental human rights should never be treated as political ruins, that are won or lost. With the politicization, it has become hostile to women’s health and rights and has been successful in shaving away at the protections Roe vs Wade once provided.
Women should have the right to make their own decisions concerning their bodies and health. There are various reasons and point of views as to why one would consider an abortion. There are underage girls, who have made mistakes and got pregnant. Some girls are too young to give the child a fair chance at life. Some girls are victims of trafficking, that resulted in unwanted pregnancies.
Some women have made the decision and chose not to be parents for various reasons. Some women have birth control mishaps, that results in pregnancy, while others could be rape or trafficking survivors. For this reason, some rape survivors attempt to harm themselves and/or the baby because they couldn’t get pass the memory a such tragedy. Therefore, any or all of these scenarios should be left up to a woman to make the decisions concerning “her” body.
Women awake to the reality of forcing the Heartbeat Bill S1. As an elected official and a woman, I feel the need to speak out on this issue. It’s called FETAL Heartbeat Bill. I find it disturbing that we have elected officials from Greenwood, SC on the state level making decisions for EVERY woman in S. C. However, no one has taken the time to speak with women or allow them the opportunity to make their own decisions. I believe, an abortion decision is between God, a woman, and her husband/or significant other and their Physician.

Message from the Chair
Tomorrow marks the end of one of the most difficult periods of our country’s history and despite that, I still owe Donald J. Trump a small debt of gratitude.
I recently was surprised to discover that I had been quoted in the Index Journal back in September of 2017.
Kimler, who for most of his life was disinterested in politics, said he became active in the organization after the presidential election in November.
“My first meeting was wall to wall, packed with a lot of concern and a lot of people upset, and that hasn’t diminished,” he said. “I’ve been ambivalent about politics my entire life. When you start to motivate the politically lazy, you know you’re in trouble.”
It wasn’t the election of Trump to office that turned me into an activist. It’s what he did immediately after taking office, starting with the disgraceful Muslim travel ban, that drove me to my first Democrat meeting. And just about every disgraceful action since, done under the cover and protection of the Republican Congress and Senate, has fueled my energy ever since.
And now that Trump’s presidency has resulted in the loss of the White House, Senate, and Congress for the Republicans it appears I wasn’t alone in that motivation. Dare I say my quote now sounds a bit prescient?
But before I crown myself as the next Nostradamus, one of the most valuable lessons we must never forget is that our Democracy is precious and fragile. We were just one failed businessman and gameshow host away from becoming one of those nations that enter into the history books as part of dark chapter. Can we keep the momentum alive and continue to fight for what is decent and right even when the shift in power in Washington DC is currently in our favor? I sure hope and pray we do.
We can prevent sliding back to the Trump years by volunteering to help with messaging and education, voter registration, and community service. We need you to throw your hat in the ring and be a voice for us who are in desperate need of representation. Let us learn and grow from this experience.

Patricia Partlow will be sworn in at the next Greenwood City Council meeting on Monday, Jan 25 at 5:30 pm. If you are member of Ward 2, show up in support of your new City Council Representative!
Swearing in Ceremony
Join us for a Virtual get-together as we watch the swearing-in ceremony of our next President and Vice-President on Wednesday!!
The inaugural ceremonies will begin with the national anthem and invocation around 11:30 a.m. ET. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris is expected to be sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor shortly before noon.
President-elect Biden will then be sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts at noon ET on the Capitol’s West Front, as is tradition.
We will live stream the proceedings in a virtual Zoom room. We’ve also uncovered a small leftover supply of Biden-Harris signs and bumper stickers. Attendees will get them on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last!
