Follow the Money!

by George Swindell, Treasurer for the GWCDP

Super PAC money has now trickled down to the SC Senate Race between Senator Nicholson and Billy Garrett. The American Freedom and Opportunity PAC are funding the very negative direct mail material that many of us are receiving. Google searches reveal this PAC to be a reboot of the SC Republican Caucus which ran into trouble with the SC Supreme Court over political contributions. They are targeting Democratic incumbents across the State with money raised nationally, from mega donors. In their latest financial disclosure they show a series of seven cash infusions, totaling $771,000 from a single source, The Senate Victory Fund out of Alexandria, VA.

Message from the Chair

This is a very full newsletter this time around. Please take your time and read carefully as there’s quite a bit of important information contained in this edition.

Being informed is what separates the good voter from the bad.

When I listened to the speeches given by candidates on both sides at the Cokesbury Stump Speeches last week, it was striking to observe which candidates came to inform the voters and which came purely to rouse emotions with trigger phrases and falsehoods. At times, I was tempted to jump out of my seat and cry “You lie!” But unlike the Congressman in SC’s 2nd District, I know how to properly behave myself in public.

There are only 2 weeks left until Election Day. Yes, early voters have turned out in record-breaking numbers this year. But there are still so many we need to reach and persuade to partake in this process and inform who is running at the local level.Below are many opportunities for you to help. Please find one or more and jump in! You can also share our candidate’s advertisements and graphics from our Twitter or Facebook pages and help flood the social media with support for these good men and women.

Dum spiro spero
While I breathe, I hope

Letters to the Editor (Oct 17)

Candidates focus on ideas, not on ideology alone

Bill Kimler, Greenwood

I have had the absolute honor of getting to personally know a few of our candidates who are running for office: Floyd Nicholson, Jose Villa, Anne Parks, Denise Waldrep and Matthew Miller.

I am overwhelmed in admiration for the civility, the intelligence and creative solution-finding they have shown these past few months. In a political environment that has only grown more poisonous these past four years, they have remained positive, focusing on their ideas and accomplishments, refusing to dive into the political muck that turns so many people off.

And that to me is the biggest differentiator: Ideas over ideology. Ideas will bring affordable and accessible health care to more people. Ideas will free our best minds and entrepreneurs to grow our economy and solve global problems. Ideas will bring about equal treatment and opportunity for all of us and not just for the privileged few. Ideas will enable our educators to teach and our students to learn.

Ideology will do none of that.

As you make your choice this November, please take the time to listen to the ideas proposed by the candidates and select those who will work on solutions that bring about the greatest benefit to the most people.

Writes to support Nicholson’s reelection

Bob Phillips, Donalds

Vigilance is the cost of freedom. We pay that cost by community service, with our votes and with our faith.

The best vigilance, it seems to me, is bipartisan. I am proud to count as my friends those who have voted differently from me — proud that we still talk. That is why sending Floyd Nicholson back to the state Senate helps ensure freedom. I have seen him arm-in-arm with Greenwood Republican activists. Furthermore, when Republican Sen. Billy O’Dell was serving, Sen. Nicholson and he shared an office.

Sen. Nicholson’s opponent distills his campaign as follows: “pro-God, pro-jobs, pro-life, pro-Trump.” Curiously, Sen. Nicholson agrees on the first three. His deep faith shows in everything he does. His work on the Senate Finance Committee brings jobs to District 10. (Last week, an Ag-Pro employee told me that Sen. Nicholson had worked wonders for Upstate farmers.)

Anyone who attended Greenwood’s Inter-Faith Rally — put on by local churches — will remember how Sen. Nicholson called on Abbeville and Greenwood communities to rally to prevent the loss of life among young men because of gun violence. He is pro-life, not merely pro-birth.

I put my faith in — have placed my vote for — Sen. Nicholson. He has heard and felt bullets fly past, thus experiencing and surviving gun violence. He has coached and counseled hundreds of young people, and he has helped revitalize downtown Greenwood.

A phrase by Pam Stone exemplifies Sen. Floyd Nicholson’s many endeavors: he demonstrates “the tenacity of dignity, courage and faith.”

Message from the Chair

Many of us are feeling the anxiety of the past 4 years piling up as we head into these last few weeks. It’s perfectly understandable. This chaotic Administration has gone into overdrive with a sense of desperation and we feel its effects even way down here in Greenwood, SC.

Besides casting your vote there are a number of great ways to release that stressful energy and be left with a sense of accomplishment:

  • You can walk with me to distribute Voter Guides in neighborhoods that have historically low voter turnout.
  • You can help make calls to Democratic voters who skipped the 2018 election and encourage them to vote this year!
  • You can safely canvass for Senator Floyd Nicholson or candidate Denise Waldrep this weekend.
  • You can assist in helping our incapacitated voters to get their ballots into the Elections Office.
  • Finally, you can be a “poll watcher” to help ensure that the processes are followed correctly and report any incidents which impede a fair election process.

If any of these opportunities to be an active citizen interest you, then read below! It takes all of us to be “All In for SC” to make a change for the better!

Candidate News

The Vice Presidential debate on Wednesday showed the nation that Kamala Harris is more than qualified to be our Vice President. Take a look at the polling numbers comparing 2016 to 2020 by the same source (CNN):

2016 VP debate winner:

Pence 48%
Kaine 42%

2020 VP debate winner:
Harris 59%
Pence 38%

We all know polls don’t win elections. Votes do. But this certainly does bode well for the strength of our Democratic ticket!

“All in”

That’s a term not to be used lightly. When you say “all in”, it indicates you’re ready to give every last bit you can to a cause. It means you will have NO REGRETS when the big moment comes, because win, lose, or draw, you can say that you left nothing behind.

In July, the Jaime Harrison campaign partnered up with the South Carolina Democratic Party to launch a coordinated “All In” campaign to defeat Lindsey Graham and to secure Democratic victories up and down the ballot. This means shared resources, shared funds, shared volunteers and a message that helping Jaime helps Floyd, Anne, Jose, Denise, Hosea, Matthew and all the Democratic candidates.

Tomorrow, the “All In” GOTV Mobile Unit will be coming to town. From 3 – 5 pm on Tuesday, Oct 6, at West Cambridge Park, I will be there along with representatives from the State Democratic Party to distribute yard signs, bumper stickers, and other material to generate the enthusiasm that OUR TIME IS NOW!

In return, we volunteer our time, our energy, and our finances to our local candidates to drive up voter turnout and engagement for our local candidates which then helps Jaime, Kamala, and Joe.

Every day possible, I’ll be hitting the streets with fellow volunteers to distribute our Democratic Voters Guides which spotlight our Democratic Candidates who are in a competitive election this year. We’re not engaging directly with people (out of a concern for safety). But we have thousands that we want to get to doors we’ve specifically targeted where they’ll make the most difference.

Will you go “all-in” with us and give a couple of hours over the next 28 days to help achieve this ambitious goal? If not this particular activity, read below for many other opportunities for you to jump in and contribute to the fight for our country.

Message from the Chair

Last night was historic for the Greenwood County Democrats. For the first time ever, we held our annual (and newly renamed) Carnell-Drummond-Mays Dinner in a manner that kept everyone informed, inspired, and most importantly – SAFE!

Did you see that we made the front page news this morning?

This was the culmination of 2 months’ worth of effort: Publicity, food logistics, content preparation, candidate engagement, and technical delivery. We were blessed to have a hardworking committee and equally blessed to have a membership who put faith in us such that over 150 tickets were sold!

If you missed it – don’t worry. You can watch it at your leisure on a custom YouTube playlist we created that broke the 2-hour proceedings into individual segments.

While it was great fun putting together a “virtual” event, we surely hope that we can gather in person again at our 14th annual Carnell-Drummond-Mays Dinner!

We’ve had dozens of new subscribers to our mailing list in the past few weeks. Welcome! With the Dinner behind us, we will be increasing our communications a bit to about twice a week during this final month of the election. If you have anything you would like to get out to our members, let us know at info@gwdcountydems.org.

GWCDP News

We’ve received some late-breaking news that the South Carolina Democratic Party will hosting a mobile Get Out the Vote Rally at West Cambridge Park on Tuesday, Oct 6 from 10 am to 11am.

Follow us on FacebookTwitter, or Instagram to receive details as soon as we get them. From what we hear, it will be a good place to get some candidate swag, like bumper stickers and possibly yard signs!
